Check out these easy ways to save around the home!

* Using Less Electricity

o Switch all the bulbs in your home to Compact Fluorescent (CFL), LED or Halogen bulbs. Don't forget things like bathrooms, basements, garages and closets!

o Keep an eye on your thermostat - Wear a sweater instead of cranking the heat, or wear shorts instead of cranking the AC.

o Insulate your walls and ceilings! This is a surprisingly cheap and low-renovation task that really adds up!

o Use weather sealant around doors and windows. They sell this stuff at home renovation stores. It's designed for leaks and rain but it works very well for keeping heat/cold in!

o Unplug unused appliances - Sometimes appliances will use electricity even while off!

o Wash your clothing in cold or warm water, instead of hot. You'd be surprised how clean cold water can get your clothes!

o Hang dry instead of drying in the dryer. Try to only use the dryer if there is a time-rush.

o Monitor your refridgerator. Check that the temperature is suitable and not unnecessarily cold.

o Use ceiling fans instead of AC to cool off in the summer, on days that have a bit of a breeze.

o Use a reel or electric lawn mower.

o Use small, efficient devices to prepare food.

o Avoid 'pre-heating' an empty oven. Put the food in when you turn the oven on, and you'll be able to substract a few minutes cooking time! Convenient and eco-friendly.

o Avoid opening the oven to check food. Try to gauge through the screen if it's done.


* Using Less Water

o Repair leaky faucets ASAP.

o Consider switching to a low-flow toilet and shower head.

o A cheaper alternative to low-flow toilets: Fill a plastic water bottle with sand (or any item of similar size and density) and place it in the toilet's reservoir. The result is that each flush will use less water because there is less space for water in the tank!

o Turn the water off while brushing your teeth, shaving, washing dishes or washing your face.

o Take shorter showers, and avoid baths (unless your bathtub is particularly small, or you take particularly lengthy showers).

o Run the washing machine and dishwasher only when full.

o Water your lawn only when it needs it.

o Use recycled water for your house plants.

o Skip the rinse cycle on your dishwasher.


* Producing Less Waste

o Recycle and Reuse whenever possible.

o Bring a reusable tote bag for grocery shopping, or reuse plastic bags.

o Start a compost pile.

o Try to buy products with less packaging. Avoid "individually wrapped" cookies and such.

o Avoid using throw-away products like paper napkins, plastic plates and cutlery, etc.

o Buy your eggs in cardboard cartons.

o Start a vegetable, herb and fruit garden.

o For the office: Print double-sided copies.


* Protect Biodiversity

o Buy organic produce.

o Try to eat less meat - Try protein alternates like Tofu.

o Pick fish carefully. Consult seafood guides to be sure you're not purchasing seafood that is being over-fished or in decline.

o Avoid pesticides and herbicies whenever possible.

o Use environmentally friendly paint when re-painting your home.

o Use bat boxes to reduce mosquitos, instead of chemical spray.

o When barbequing, make sure your charcoal comes from a sustainable source, or use a gas / propane grill instead.
